MATT HEMA
Coach Matt Hema has put together the CVHS program with the vision of providing a safe and positive environment for all young players to continue to grow and develop in all facets of the game of basketball. From the physical aspects of learning how to play the game through fundamental skill teaching and skill development, to the emotional and psychological growth that comes with playing and competing in a highly competitive basketball environment. The opportunity provided for high school players to be at the gym and to learn to play and to continue to love the game of basketball are the building blocks and the foundation for playing in the CVHS girls basketball program.
Coach Hema was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand. He played in the New Zealand National Basketball League for the Otago Nuggets from 1989-1993 as well as for the University of Otago, and the Otago Highlanders in the National Division II basketball league. He also played for the New Zealand select U-23 National team that toured the United States in December of 1993 and was selected to the New Zealand Universities teams from 1990-1992.
Coach Hema moved to the United States in 1994 and began his coaching career with youth boys basketball at the AAU level in Topeka, Kansas in 1996. Returning to Colorado in 1998, Matt began coaching girls in high school and has coached girls basketball at Douglas County High School (1998-2001), Coronado High School (2001-2004), Regis Jesuit High School (2004-2010), and currently at Castle View High School (2010-present).
Coach Hema has coached high school and competitive club basketball in Colorado for 25 years and was voted to coach the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports all star basketball game in 2014, nominated and voted to coach the Colorado High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) all-state games in the Summer of 2015 and 2019, and a coach of The Show all star game top 40 in 2018. He was also voted Continental League coach of the year in 2018. Coach Hema is currently the Head Girls Coach at Castle View High School and will be entering his 14th season in 2023-2024.

Coach Cary Garner is a Colorado native married for 28 years and has 4 kids. Coach Garner went to Smoky Hill High School and graduated college from CU. He has coached youth sports for the last 20+ years with the majority of that time coaching youth basketball. "The main reason I coach youth sports is seeing what a difference sports, and specifically basketball, can do for kids' confidence on and off the court. It is a great way to teach life lessons that will hopefully stay with them throughout their life. I'm excited to be part of the Castle View High School Basketball program and the Sabercat family."
